God’s House, the Gate of Heaven
In Gen. 28:10-22, we read the account of Jacob’s dream. Jacob was going through a very difficult time.
He was running away from an angry brother, an offended father, and a conniving mother, which led to a
difficult family situation. At this low point of his life, God chose to appear to him and make a covenant
with him – the covenant He made with his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac. What an amazing
God, we have! In the lowest point of our lives, when we feel as though there is no one to help or support
us, God chooses to reveal Himself with an appropriate revelation of Himself and His plans for us.
The ladder represents Christ himself. In the dream, Christ was at the top of the ladder. But in John 1:51,
Christ says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God
ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” When Christ said this, He was on earth. But now He is
risen again and at the top of the ladder. This shows that He is Sovereign and in control, no matter how
out of control our lives and the world around us are. Christ is the door to heaven. Angels ascending and
descending remind us that they work to do God’s pleasure, His command, to deliver His children, or to
distract, and if needed, to destroy the evil doers.
Every time we worship, may our spiritual eyes open to see and experience a taste of heaven. Let us all pray
and work that God’s house will become the gate of heaven for many to meet the Savior.
God’s covenant of love toward us in the NT through Christ is eternally sealed with His blood. What is our
response? Let us also unconditionally love God and one another. Let us make the house of God our
habitation, not just to be a doorkeeper or an attendee. Let us actively minister according to our talents
God has given each one of us. Jacob anointed the stone, which was his pillow, with oil. Let us anoint the
house of God with our tears so that God will use each one of us mightily. Jacob promised to give tithes. Let
us tithe not only our treasures, but also tithe our time, our talents, our energies, for the building up of
God’s house that it will be the gateway to heaven for many.
