Standing in the Gap

Standing in the gap means to intercede and plead in prayer for God’s mercy, protection, deliverance, salvation, and even to deliver from the judgment of God upon evildoers.

Moses stood in the gap on behalf of the children of Israel, pleading for God’s mercy. A well-known occasion recorded in Exodus 32:1-14 was when the people made a golden calf and worshipped it, after God had delivered them from Egypt with a mighty arm and many miracles. God told Moses that He would consume them and make Moses a great nation, v. 9-10. But Moses stood in the gap between God and His people. He prayed, pleading God’s mercies, mentioned God’s covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of the reproach to God’s name by the Egyptians, and v. 14 says, God repented of the evil which He thought to do unto His people.” Towards the end of Moses’ life, in Deuteronomy 9:18 and 25, we are told that Moses fasted and prayed 40 days and 40 nights two times for the children of Israel.

The Psalmist mentions this in Psalm 106:23. There are many others mentioned in Scripture who stood in the gap. Abraham, when he pleaded with God to spare Sodom, Gen. 18:22; Stephen, when he was being stoned, Acts. 7:60; Paul prayed for Israel’s salvation, Rom. 10:1; and Christ for the Jews and all humanity, when He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Christ is continuing His intercession for us, Heb. 7:25. In this age of persecution of Christians, silencing of Christians, when the wall of protection looks to be apparently breached by the enemy, are we willing to stand in the gap? God, in His wisdom and
sovereignty, uses the prayers of His people to accomplish His will. God still seeks for us His children to
stand in the gap for family and friends, people groups, and nations. In Ezekiel 22:30-31, it is written that
God was looking for someone who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Him, lest the Lord consume them. Scripture says, at that time, God found no one.

Brothers and Sisters, let us be gap men and women, not just praying for our families and us, but praying
for people, kindred, tribes, and nations. Pray for this nation and the nations of the world for their
salvation. Christ is the only hope for all people of all nations!
